Soil systematics and classification systems Part I: Fundamentals Soil‐ordering systems are primarily based and developed on one of two underlying principles: They are either categorized according to soil‐forming processes, or the formation of categories develops by chosen parameters. This perspective has already been established in the literature, though it is often confusing as many terms are defined and applied differently. In this contribution, the various definitions of systematics, classification, taxonomy, and identification will be clearly differentiated and summarized. The core of our work is to clearly define and contrast three terms: systematics, classification, and identification. Systematics is the fundamental scientific and deductive ordering of objects into systematic units. The purpose of this approach is to organize the entire spectrum of knowledge within a discipline into a transparent and manageable form. Classification, in direct contrast to systematics, is goal‐oriented and an inductive ordering of objects. Thus, the ordering scheme consists of classes which are clearly parameterized. Identification is the ordering of new objects into an already existing systematics or classification system. Close attention is paid to both the differences and the similarities between a systematics and a classification system, especially pertaining to their practical applications. The identification requires that the category‐forming characteristics can be measured (e.g., for soil systematics, these are the soil‐forming processes and factors). Currently, it is unfortunately not feasible to objectively quantify most soil‐forming processes. Thus, most attempts at categorizing soils by systematics are hypothetical and highly subjective in nature. The resulting identification derived from the soil systematics approach is open to questions and contestable, since a graded measuring system does not yet exist to verify these determinations. In contrast, a soil‐classification system does allow an objective soil‐profile identification, although such systems are conceived pragmatically and designed for a practical purpose (e.g., not scientifically based on process intensities). Unfortunately, such a classification system cannot be applied as a universal scientific categorization system due to this method of conception. Both categorization approaches are required in soil science in order to satisfy both the practical and the scientific aspects of the field. However, substantial research must be done to complete and verify systematics. The only viable short‐term solution is through the development of a graded classification system where the categories of the system are directly derived from the current systematics approach. In the long run both the exact investigation and the detailed modeling of the soil‐forming processes are inevitable.  相似文献

Isoflavone profile and biological activity of soy bread   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The present study examines the ability of isoflavone extracts from whole soy bread and two soy bread fractions, crumb and crust, to modulate the proliferation of human prostate cancer PC-3 cells. Total isoflavone content in the two fractions of soy bread were similar (3.17 micromol/g dry basis). However, their conjugate patterns were altered. Both fractions of soy bread contained a similar level of isoflavone aglycones ( approximately 24%). Low concentrations of soy bread extracts increased PC-3 cell proliferation as much as 47% compared to untreated control. This proliferative effect in cell growth was reduced at higher extract concentration. Soy bread crust extract (10 mg/mL) reduced PC-3 cell proliferation by 15% compared to untreated control. Interestingly, wheat bread extracts increased cell proliferation at all concentrations tested. Although extracts from both breads possessed biological activity, only soy bread crust extract reduced PC-3 cell proliferation. This observation may be related to the presence of soy in this bread.  相似文献

Continuing previous investigations, two test feedstuffs whose fishmeal content had been reduced to 5% and which were supplemented with 4.5 g methionine and 5.0 g lysine per kg resp. 6 g methionine and 6 g lysine per kg were proofed in comparison with a fattening feed for trout as customary in trade and with a fish meal content of 35%. The content of animal protein in the control feed was at least 75% (crude protein content 41%), in test feed I at most 35% (crude protein content 35.4%), in test feed II at most 17% (crude protein content 33.9%). All feedstuffs had the same energy content. The tests were made with rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) of 80...100 g at the beginning and at water temperatures of 11...12 degrees C. They were conducted over a period of 112 days. After giving the same amount of feed, growth of and feed expenditure for the fish feed with the test feedstuffs were less suitable than of those fish which had received the control feed. Concerning the protein efficiency ratio, the productive protein value and the energetic expenditure too, the best results were achieved with the control feed.  相似文献

The deposition of fat in muscle, recognized by the consumer as marbling, is an important meat quality trait. The objective of the study was to provide additional insights into the quantitative extent of marbling by means of computer image analysis. Fifty-one F(2) generation German Holstein and Charolais crossbreed cattle, 18 mo of age, were used to determine relationships among marbling traits, adipocyte size, and the amount of adipose tissue in different depots. Differences were recorded among the size of i.m. adipocytes in different groups of marbling flecks, divided according to the location in the muscle cross-section and to the size of the marbling flecks. The results showed positive correlation between i.m. adipocyte size and the weight of s.c. fat, intestinal fat, omental fat, and perirenal fat (r = 0.50, 0.61, 0.70, and 0.63, respectively, P < 0.001). The i.m. adipocyte size was correlated with i.m. fat content, number of marbling flecks, proportion of marbling fleck area, and total length of marbling flecks (r = 0.71, 0.44, 0.62, and 0.55, respectively, P < 0.01). The number of marbling flecks was also correlated with i.m. fat content, proportion of marbling fleck area, and total length of marbling flecks (r = 0.58, 0.62, and 0.91, P < 0.01, respectively). The ventral marbling flecks had a 5-fold larger fleck area, 4-fold more adipocytes, and larger adipocytes (P < 0.001). Larger marbling flecks contained larger adipocytes (P < 0.001). Moreover, compared with the small marbling flecks, there was a 48-fold larger fleck area and 26-fold more adipocytes in the large marbling flecks. The results indicate that i.m. fat deposition increases concurrently with the other fat depots but is still independent. Furthermore, the i.m. fat is preferentially deposited in the ventral area of LM. Although the i.m. adipocyte size has an important effect on the traits of marbling flecks, cell number plays a greater role in i.m. fat deposition than cell size.  相似文献

Public sector activities are often neglected in the economic approaches used to analyze the driving forces behind urban growth. The institutional status of a regional capital is a crucial aspect of public sector activities. This paper reports on a quasi‐natural experiment on county towns in East Germany. Since 1990, East German cities have demonstrated remarkable differences in population development. During this same period, many towns have lost their status as a county seat due to several administrative reforms. Using a difference‐in‐differences approach, we compare the annual population development of former county capitals to population change in towns that have successfully held on to their capital status throughout the observed period. The estimations show that losing county capital status has a statistically significant negative effect on annual changes in population. This effect continues to increase over time after the respective reforms have been implemented.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted in order to analyse the effects of the herbicide Basta® with glufosinate-ammonium as the active ingredient (that inhibits specifically the enzyme glutamine-synthetase) on the grapevine plant and the infestation with Plasmopara viticola, the downy mildew pathogen. The herbicide was applied at sublethal concentrations and the toxic effects on leaves and berries based on different quality parameters were estimated. Low concentrations of glufosinate-ammonium (<?0,625?mM) did not affect the chlorophyll and amino acid concentrations in leaves. This was also the case for the content of salicylic acid and phenolic compounds. Furthermore, must parameters such as sugars (glucose and fructose), acids (tartaric acid, malic acid, total acids and volatile acids), and alcohol (ethanol and glycerine) also remained unchanged compared to the fungicide-treated or untreated control, whereas the concentrations of nitrogenous components metabolically available to yeasts increased with increasing concentrations of glufosinate-ammonium. The amount of berries harvested at the end of the experiment depended on the glufosinate-ammonium concentration applied. The harvest was highest when glufosinate-ammonium was applied as a 0.1?mM solution and differed not significantly from the fungicide-treated control, but decreased with increasing herbicide doses. However, the infestation of leaves with P. viticola was significantly reduced by the application of the herbicide, even though not each infection was eradicated due to the non-systemic mode of action of the herbicide. The particular influence of the herbicide onto this host-parasite interaction still remains unclear. Since applications of glufosinate-ammonium at low concentrations seem not to affect grapevine plants negatively, but were able to reduce the infestation with downy mildew, the specific mode of action may reveal new alternatives for the control of fungal pathogens.  相似文献

A diversity of N2-fixing (diazotrophic) bacteria was isolated from two traditional rice cultivars, Sataria and Kartiki, from the rice growing area of Mithila region of North Bihar, India, where low levels of nitrogen fertilizers are applied. Nitrogen-free semisolid media NFb, JMV and LGI with different carbon sources and pH-values were used for enrichment and isolation of root-associated diazotrophs. The colonization density of roots by diazotrophs, as estimated from positive pellicle formation at highest dilution in nitrogen-free enrichment media, was 106–108 diazotrophic bacteria per g fresh root weight. Roots of the cultivar Kartiki were found to be more densely colonized endophytically by diazotrophs as detected after chloramine T (1%) surface disinfection. To ascertain the phylogenetic affiliation of the isolates, phylogenetic oligonucleotide probes and the Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) technique were applied. Using group-specific rRNA directed oligonucleotide probes, the majority of the isolates could be identified as alpha-, beta-, or gamma-proteobacteria. Using 16S and 23S rRNA-directed genus- or species-specific probes, Herbaspirillum seropedicae, Azospirillum amazonense, Burkholderia cepacia/vietnamiensis, Rhizobia and Pseudomonas spp. were found to be the most prominent root associated culturable diazotrophs. Diazotrophic Gluconacetobacter spp. were also demonstrated as colonizers of rice roots. Burkholderia cenocepacia, Pseudomonas sp. and three diazotrophic PGPR reference strains were used for the inoculation of axenically grown rice seedlings to determine the plant growth promoting potential. Significant increases in the shoot length (up to 60%), shoot dry weight (up to 33%) and the grain yield (up to 26%) per plant were observed in non-axenic pot and field trials. Using semisolid enrichment media after surface sterilization of field grown inoculated rice roots and oligonucleotide probing of the diazotrophic enrichment cultures, a sustainable colonization with the inoculated bacteria could be demonstrated.  相似文献
